Real Salt Lake History
Real Salt Lake (RSL) is a professional soccer club based in Sandy, Utah, and was founded in 2004. The team quickly made a name for itself in Major League Soccer (MLS) by capturing its first championship in 2009, winning the MLS Cup. This victory was particularly notable as they entered the playoffs as the lowest seed, defeating the LA Galaxy in a dramatic final that went to penalties. The club's colors, claret and cobalt, reflect the local cultural heritage, and 'Real' is a nod to the Spanish influence in Utah. Over the years, RSL has developed a strong fan base, known as the 'RSL Nation,' and has consistently competed in the MLS playoffs. The team plays its home games at Rio Tinto Stadium, which opened in 2008 and has a capacity of approximately 20,000. RSL's history is characterized by a commitment to community engagement and youth development, with various programs aimed at fostering soccer talent in the region. The club's affiliation with the Real Monarchs, a USL team, has also helped strengthen its developmental pipeline.
