    New Jersey Symphony History

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO) has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1922. Originally founded as the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Association by a group of musicians, it was initially referred to as the 'Newark Symphony Orchestra'. Over the decades, the ensemble has evolved significantly, becoming a professional orchestra that serves the diverse communities of New Jersey. In 1940, the orchestra gained national recognition when it was invited to perform at the 1939 New York World's Fair, marking a significant milestone in its development. The orchestra has undergone several name changes and leadership transformations, with various music directors contributing to its artistic growth. The 1980s and 1990s were particularly notable, as the NJSO expanded its repertoire to include not only classical works but also contemporary pieces and collaborations with renowned guest artists. The orchestra's commitment to education and community engagement has also played a pivotal role in its history, with programs designed to bring music to schools and underrepresented communities throughout New Jersey. In 1992, the NJSO settled into its current home, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, which has since become a hub for cultural events in the region. Over the years, the orchestra has embraced innovative programming, attracting a wide audience and establishing itself as a vital part of the state's cultural fabric.
