    Jacksonville Symphony History

The Jacksonville Symphony has a rich history that dates back to 1943, when it was formed by a group of musicians from the Jacksonville area. Initially, the orchestra consisted of volunteers and was known as the Jacksonville Symphony Association. Over the decades, it has grown significantly in both size and prestige, becoming a key cultural institution in Northeast Florida. The symphony has undergone various transformations, including its first concert in 1943, which took place at the Florida Theatre. The orchestra became increasingly professionalized in the 1960s, leading to its first music director, Dr. R. Theodore Harris. The symphony has performed in various venues throughout Jacksonville, but in 1988, it found a permanent home at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts. Throughout its history, the Jacksonville Symphony has hosted a wide range of performances, from traditional classical music to innovative contemporary works. Notably, it has collaborated with renowned composers and soloists, contributing to the cultural landscape of the region. Today, the Jacksonville Symphony is recognized for its commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement, and it continues to attract a diverse audience through its varied programming.
