Established in 1994, the team originally played as a member of the New York-Penn League, which is a short-season Class A league in Minor League Baseball. The Renegades were affiliated with the New York Yankees from their inception until 1998, then they became the Class A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays in 1999.
