Coppelia History
Coppélia is a comic ballet originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon, set to the music of Léo Delibes. Premiering in 1870 at the Théâtre Imperial de l'Opéra in Paris, it is based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann titled 'Der Sandmann'. The narrative revolves around a beautiful life-sized doll named Coppélia, created by the eccentric inventor Dr. Coppélius. The ballet explores themes of love, jealousy, and the intersection of reality and fantasy, with its central character, Swanilda, becoming enamored with the doll while her fiancé, Franz, is entranced by Coppélia. Over the years, Coppélia has undergone several adaptations and revisions, with notable contributions from choreographers such as Marius Petipa and George Balanchine. Its charming blend of humor and romance, along with memorable music and choreography, has secured its place as a beloved classic in the ballet repertoire.
