Coastal Carolina Chanticleers History
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, the athletic teams representing Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina, have a vibrant history that traces back to the university's founding in 1954. Initially, the school was a two-year institution, and it wasn't until 1974 that it became a four-year university, which paved the way for the establishment of a comprehensive athletics program. The Chanticleers, named after a character from Geoffrey Chaucer's 'The Canterbury Tales,' began competing in the NCAA in 1977. Over the years, the Chanticleers have seen significant growth in their athletic programs, moving from NAIA to NCAA Division II and finally to Division I in 1991. The university joined the Big South Conference in 1991, where they found success in multiple sports, particularly in men's baseball and women's basketball, securing several conference championships. The Chanticleers gained national attention when their baseball team made its first NCAA tournament appearance in 1991 and gradually built a reputation as a competitive program, culminating in their historic NCAA Baseball Championship victory in 2016. This milestone not only showcased the university's commitment to athletics but also elevated its profile on a national scale. The football program, which began in 2003, quickly gained traction and transitioned to FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) in 2017, further solidifying the Chanticleers' place in collegiate sports. Their home games are played at Brooks Stadium, which has undergone various renovations to accommodate the growing fan base and enhance the game-day experience.
