As of 2023, the Akron Zips football team is undergoing a significant transformation under head coach Joe Moorhead, who was hired in late 2021. Moorhead, known for his innovative offensive strategies, aims to revitalize the program and improve its competitive standing within the MAC. The team is focusing on recruiting talented athletes and enhancing player development to compete at a higher level. The Zips' home games are held at InfoCision Stadium, a modern facility that provides an exciting atmosphere for fans. In recent seasons, the team has seen fluctuations in performance, but there is optimism surrounding the new direction and potential for success. The Zips are scheduled to compete against traditional rivals and other MAC teams in the upcoming season, with hopes of contending for a conference title and returning to bowl eligibility. Additionally, the team is engaging with the community through various outreach programs and events, further solidifying its place in the local sports culture.
Akron Zips Football History
The Akron Zips football program represents the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. Established in 1891, the team originally played as an independent before joining various conferences over the years. The Zips have experienced a fluctuating history, with their first significant success occurring in the 1970s when they were a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference. In 1980, the Zips transitioned to Division I-AA, now known as the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), and in 1986, they began competing in Division I-A (now known as the Football Bowl Subdivision or FBS). The Zips joined the Mid-American Conference (MAC) in 1992 and have since become a staple in the league. The team achieved its first MAC Championship in 2005 and made its first bowl appearance in the 2005 Motor City Bowl. Over the years, the Zips have produced notable players, including NFL stars like Charlie Frye, who went on to play for the Cleveland Browns, and has a rich tradition of rivalries, particularly with teams like the Ohio Bobcats and Kent State Golden Flashes. Despite facing challenges, the Zips have maintained a dedicated fan base and continue to build their program.
